Dennis Dawson's Training Samples

Training is my first love. I like to teach people practical skills that help them to be more productive. This can take the form of live training, written tutorials, or web-based presentations.

My basic philosophies (similar to my writing philosophies):

Here are some samples of my writing style.

Web Training

9iFS Developer's Resources

Developer's Resources is my own creation, and best represents my preferred approach to technical documentation. I believe it's possible to write solid technical documentation without being dry and dull.

Online documentation has the advantage of allowing users to dig deeper in areas of interest, or letting them skip the details and get right to the step-by-step instructions.

9iFS Developer's Hour eSeminars

These are examples of web-based eSeminars I've created for Oracle 9iFS. The first four are all my own work, number 5 was written by a co-worker and I presented it. Number 6 was a collaboration: I scripted the class based on a co-workers written work, then we delivered the class together, with me asking questions representative of someone in the audience. I like the team approach, because it's more interesting to listen to two people.

Oracle Internet File System Stores Files in the Database

This is a high-level, 3-minute Shockwave presentation that actually does a pretty good job of explaining how 9iFS is able to store files in a database. I plan to do more of these short presentations to illustrate key concepts of 9iFS.

Personal Projects

Here are some examples of some tutorials I've posted for hobby-related tasks (bus man's holiday, I suppose).

VRML Tips and Tricks

I spend time in Cybertown, a VRML space where people share their 3D art. I work in the virtual "mall," where people sell their items. New creators often have the same questions or problems with their items. I've created some tutorials that specifically address these questions.

How to Twist a Balloon Pig

How to Twist a Balloon Laser Gun

How to Twist a Balloon Toucan

These are a little dated (done in my early days on the web), but they show the kinds of enhancements that can be made to written instructions by adding animations, photos, and sound.
